With a pretty waterfront and common offering views across to the Isle of Wight, the coastal resort of Southsea has traditional British waterfront charm, with a fresh air of trendiness due to the increasing myriad of independent pubs, restaurants, artisan makers, boutique stores and quirky vintage shops. Southsea Waterfront is also home to the D-Day Museum, the only museum in the UK dedicated to the Allied Invasion in June 1944 and which has recently seen a £5 million transformation project to tell the historic story through the personal accounts of people who were there.44
Be sure to visit the Hotwalls Studios, the city's thriving arts hub in a unique heritage setting. Built into the arches at Point Battery & Barracks, at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, the sleek studios provide the city's up-and-coming makers, designers and artists with affordable bases to create fantastic and unique pieces. Visitors are welcome to pop into the studios to meet the artists, arrange commissions or book interactive classes. Stop for lunch at "The Deck at the Hotwalls" - a waterfront deli-style with a front row seat to the Queen Elizabeth Aircraft Carrier and to Ben Ainslie’s state-of-the-art catamarans ( (the British America’s Cup team headquarters is just around the corner.)
Explore Southsea Castle (free of charge, Tues-Sun, Apr - Oct). It was at Southsea Castle that King Henry VIII stood during the Battle of the Solent and witnessed first hand the sinking of his beloved flagship. Visitors can explore the keep, visit the Microbrewery for tastings, enjoy panoramic views from the top of the Keep to the Isle of Wight and Solent, then enjoy a bite to eat in The Courtyard (open all year).
In the evening the town comes alive with several unusual bars, including a gin bar and craft ale bar plus Henry VIII's Southsea Castle, transformed into a Champagne bar on summer evenings. Try The Portsmouth Distillery’s Tudor Rose Gin, made with botanicals found on Henry VIII’s Flagship Mary Rose and hand crafted at their unique distillery located within an 18th century Fort. Or sip fizz and watch the sunset over the Solent and the Isle of Wight whilst enjoying live music.
Stay at the historic The Queen’s Hotel which has hosted notable guests over the years including Winston Churchill, General Eisenhower, Beatrix Potter and King George V and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The hotel itself has undergone huge renovation work over recent years, revitalising the rooms and dining spaces whilst keeping the beautiful, ornate touches you'd expect from such a historic building - not least the grand foyer with its opulent painted ceiling.
