Explore the Great Outdoors in Thunder Bay during the Winter



Thunder Bay is regarded by many as one of Canada’s premier outdoor cities and in winter is no different. Thunder Bay is known for both it’s local parks and the region’s many provincial parks to explore, offering kilometers of trails.  So, get outside and enjoy the great outdoors by strapping on a pair of downhill or cross-country skis, renting a fat bike or try your hand at ice climbing or snow shoeing.  After enjoying the outdoors, reward yourself with one of our renowned culinary experiences or even a live theatre or musical performance.


Thunder Bay’s alpine ski areas, Mount Baldy and Loch Lomond, offer skiing and snowboarding, tubing, fat biking and snowshoeing. Mount Baldy Ski Area, located just north of the city was Ontario’s first ski hill to open for the 2023/24 season. Loch Lomond Ski Area is located south of the city offers great views of the countryside around Thunder Bay. For those visitors that prefer to stay on flatter ground, Thunder Bay has two Nordic Ski Centres that offer visitors the chance to enjoy the great outdoors while relaxing with an easy ski or snowshoe. The Kamview Nordic Centre offers over 30 kilometers of ski and snowshoe trails that bring you through the boreal forest that lead you to stunning views of the area.  The Lappe Ski Centre is a world-class facility known for it’s 15.5 kilometres of trails among the trees and is globally renowned as a training and competition centre for skiers from around the world.


Cycling year round is just how we roll in Thunder Bay.  With over 50 kilometers of cycling trails in the Trowbridge Forest, riders from around the world have made the trip to Thunder Bay to ride. Considered Canada’s Fat Bike capital, Thunder Bay’s groomed fat bike trails at Trowbridge and the Mount Baldy Ski Area offer a new way to love winter with views that will leave you wanting more. Fat bikes can be rented in Thunder Bay at Fresh Air and Rollin’ Thunder for those who want that unique experience while visiting Thunder Bay.
