LGBTQ End Summer in Athens, Georgia: Beer Fest, Film Festival, Boutique Hotels & Southern Dining

Visit Athens Georgia LGBTQ

Athens, Georgia, offers travelers a relaxed, walkable getaway just an hour from Atlanta, making it an ideal destination to close out the summer. Known for its musical legacy as the hometown of bands like R.E.M. and for its electric atmosphere during college football season, this creative Southern city blends live music, a thriving arts scene, exceptional dining, and boutique accommodations into a weekend that feels both laid-back and full of discovery.

Two events make late summer an especially exciting time to visit. On August 22, the Athens Beer Fest takes over Akins Ford Arena from 1–4 p.m., featuring regional beer tastings, live music, and a cornhole tournament, all benefiting The Classic Center Cultural Foundation. From August 27–30, the Athens Film Festival returns for its third year with a spirited lineup of screenings, panels, and special events celebrating bold, independent cinema. The four-day festival will showcase an impressive selection of films representing both local and international talent.

Athens also offers plenty of memorable places to stay. Hotel Indigo, a boutique property in the heart of downtown, is a LEED Gold-certified hotel that blends traditional Southern hospitality with contemporary style. Another standout option is The Athenian, an elegant 11-room boutique hotel housed in a beautifully restored Greek Revival mansion. Each guest room is named after a Greek god or goddess, pairing original architectural details such as soaring ceilings and antique fireplaces with understated modern design.

The city's culinary scene is equally impressive. Start your day at Mama's Boy, where local favorites include fluffy biscuits and the famous "chocolate cake for breakfast." For lunch, Trappeze Pub is a longtime favorite known for its crave-worthy fries, gourmet sandwiches, and extensive craft beer selection. In the evening, South Kitchen + Bar offers a menu with something for every palate, from duck fat tater tots to bourbon-glazed salmon.

With a packed calendar of events, inviting boutique hotels, and an outstanding dining scene, Athens makes for an unforgettable end-of-summer escape. For more information about the Classic City, visit VisitAthensGA.com.
