Small Town Spotlight: Lafayette/West Lafayette, Indiana

Pride Lafayette, Inc. and the Pride Lafayette Community Center serve the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ+) community of Tippecanoe County, Indiana and surrounding areas. We are an entirely volunteer-based organization operating 100% on the generous donations of time and money from community members. Our history includes growing out of two community center locations and the successful coordination of several pride festivals in downtown Lafayette. We are constantly looking for new ways to fulfill our vision of being the premier link to the Greater Lafayette LGBTQ+ community.

OUTfest, Lafayette’s annual pride festival hosted by Pride Lafayette, aims to increase public awareness of the LGBTI community in Lafayette and beyond, bring attention to LGBTI issues, provide resources and celebrate diversity. Live entertainment, great food and beer gardens, drag show, vendors and family activities can be enjoyed.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) Center provides programming that engages the entire Purdue University campus and community on LGBTQ issues through:

an exciting calendar of events, a distinguished lecture series, advocacy for equitable access and a discrimination-free environment as well as facilitation of a variety of training opportunities throughout the year.

The LGBTQ Center maintains an extensive print and media library, as well as a collection of original artwork and historical artifacts, that communicates an all-too-often hidden history. Tours of the center highlight the diverse LGBTQ community, relate key historical moments, explore the complexity of identity, address common stereotypes and misinformation about LGBTQ people, and create opportunities for building intercultural dialogue and connections.

The LGBTQ Center is the primary point of contact for members of the LGBTQ community as it works collaboratively with campus departments, student organizations, University administration and local community groups to connect students with the enriching resources, activities and support services they seek in order to be successful at Purdue and beyond.

Lafayette’s Premier LGBTQ+ performance group, which hosts drag brunches throughout the year.
