In a major step toward promoting sustainable and community-driven tourism, South African Tourism and U.S.-based nonprofit Tourism Cares have unveiled the Meaningful Travel Map of South Africa — a digital platform designed to connect travelers and travel professionals with responsible and culturally rich tourism experiences throughout the country.
The initiative is the first of its kind in Africa and serves as part of Tourism Cares’ broader Meaningful Travel Program, which supports global destinations in amplifying travel experiences that prioritize environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and community empowerment.
“South Africa’s landscapes, wildlife, and cultures are among the richest and most diverse in the world, and we recognize the importance of safeguarding them for generations to come,” said Darryl Erasmus, Chief Operations Officer at South African Tourism. “The launch of the Meaningful Travel Map of South Africa allows us to spotlight the remarkable efforts of local tourism changemakers and invite the world to experience South Africa in a more conscious and meaningful way.”
Showcasing Impactful Travel Experiences
The Meaningful Travel Map highlights a carefully curated selection of travel products that exemplify responsible tourism across multiple sectors. From conservation programs and indigenous-led cultural tours to eco-lodges and social enterprises, each featured experience has been thoroughly vetted for its positive social, environmental, and cultural contributions.
By showcasing these offerings, the map encourages travelers to go beyond mainstream itineraries and engage in tourism that leaves a lasting, positive impact on local communities.

Building a Responsible Travel Future
Tourism Cares CEO Greg Takehara emphasized the alignment between South Africa’s values and the organization’s mission. “Tourism Cares is proud to welcome South Africa to our global family of destination partners,” he said. “South Africa’s leadership in responsible tourism — from its early conservation initiatives to its continued focus on cultural preservation and community upliftment — aligns perfectly with the vision of our Meaningful Travel Program. We are thrilled to welcome the first Meaningful Travel Map in Africa and are committed to working with South African Tourism to build a future where travel leaves a positive, lasting impact.”
The Meaningful Travel Program equips travel professionals with tools, education, and real-world examples that show how sustainable travel practices can support development, strengthen communities, and protect cultural and natural heritage.
A Destination Poised for Conscious Exploration
South African Tourism has long advocated for a holistic model of tourism — one that supports biodiversity conservation, respects cultural heritage, and uplifts local communities. With over 21 national parks, 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, nearly 2,000 miles of coastline, and a deeply ingrained tradition of warm hospitality, South Africa offers an extraordinary canvas for responsible travel.
