Spring in Athens: Festivals, Athens Twilight Criterium, Boybutante Ball & Outdoor Adventures in the Classic City

Athens Georgia LGBTQ

Spring is one of the best times to visit Athens, as the Classic City comes alive with festivals, live music and outdoor experiences. From high-energy events to local markets and cultural celebrations, there is something happening almost every weekend. Highlights include the Athens Twilight Criterium (April 17-18), a nationally recognized cycling race that transforms downtown into a lively festival, and the 37th annual Boybutante Ball (April 18), one of Athens’ most iconic drag shows and fundraisers supporting local HIV/AIDS organizations.

April 18 is especially busy, with the University of Georgia’s G-Day Game offering a preview of the upcoming football season alongside a spirited campus atmosphere. The UGA International Street Festival also takes place that day, celebrating global cultures through food, performances and artisan vendors. The season continues with Indie South Springtacular (May 2-3), a curated maker's market featuring local artists, vintage finds and handmade goods in a community-driven setting.

Beyond the events, visitors can explore the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, where 300 acres of gardens, trails and conservatories showcase vibrant spring blooms and native plants. At Bear Hollow Zoo, guests can see rescued native wildlife, including black bears, birds of prey and reptiles, in a natural, educational setting. For those looking to get outdoors, the Firefly Trail offers a scenic, multi-use path ideal for biking or walking, connecting Athens to surrounding communities.
