South Bend and Mishawaka, also known as The Bend, is a place where you’re encouraged to explore both the well-known and the roads less traveled. The University of Notre Dame and the St. Joseph River are two of the area’s defining features, but they’re only part of the story. Across neighborhoods, downtowns, and outdoor spaces, there’s a mix of experiences that are easy to step into and even easier to make your own. Spring is when that becomes most visible. People head back outside, and the St. Joseph River, which runs through both downtowns, becomes a natural starting point. You can walk, bike, or paddle along the river, with parks and downtown just steps away.

As the day winds down, the energy shifts. Zoo Luminate at the Potawatomi Zoo, running April 22 through June 28, transforms the grounds with large-scale illuminated lantern displays that give a familiar place a completely different feel. That shift carries into the evening as patio season returns. Spots like The Lauber, Manny’s, Crooked Ewe, and Cascade fill up quickly, with people settling in and staying awhile.
Downtown, murals are part of the streetscape, and spaces like the South Bend Museum of Art and Highland Studio & Gallery showcase work from local and regional artists throughout the season. The Morris Performing Arts Center anchors downtown with Broadway tours, concerts, and performances year-round, including CLUE this May. Just beyond downtown, in the Near Northwest Neighborhood, you can stop into Brain Lair Books, The Botany Shop, and The Portage Collective. Don't miss Counterspell Café when you’re ready for a break.
By early summer, that same community energy builds into South Bend Pride on June 20, when Potawatomi Park fills with performances, local vendors, and celebration. It’s a natural extension of what visitors experience throughout the season, a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that makes The Bend feel both easy to explore and worth coming back to.
