An LGBTQ Holiday Escape in Carson City, Nevada

Nevada’s capital celebrates the holidays like a small town that happens to have a state Capitol for a front yard. The season officially begins with the Silver & Snowflake Festival of Lights on Friday, Dec. 4, 2026, when thousands of people gather on the Nevada State Capitol grounds for the state tree lighting. Carson City fifth graders sing carols on the Capitol steps, Santa and the Grinch make appearances, hot cocoa flows and free sleigh rides roll down Carson Street. It’s a tradition with deep roots. On Christmas Eve 1914, about 1,500 residents gathered to watch a single pine tree lit on the Capitol lawn and the name “Silver and Snowflakes” is a nod to the Silver State and its snowy Sierra winters.
Crews spend the month after Halloween stringing more than 1,500 strands of lights across more than 100 trees on the Capitol’s grounds. A lighted archway leads to the Capitol entrance and giant illuminated snowflakes line downtown Carson Street. The display glows nightly through the first week of the new year, so visitors who miss the festival still get the full effect.
Carson City also works well as a base for a longer winter getaway. Travelers can soak in the natural mineral pools at Carson Hot Springs, reach Lake Tahoe’s ski resorts in about 30 minutes and walk the Kit Carson Trail past Victorian-era homes and churches dressed for the season. Festival holiday events including concerts and more happy all season long.
Carson City doesn't just resemble a holiday movie town - it made its own holiday movie. Visit Carson City produced “A Winter’s Charm in Carson City,” a tongue-in-cheek, 15-minute holiday rom-com filmed on location. Travelers can follow a three-day itinerary built around the film’s stops for the perfect holiday escape.
