Beneath the moss-draped live oaks of Jekyll Island, Georgia, grand historic cottages hold stories of wealth, privilege and lives long past. Once a winter retreat for some of America’s wealthiest families, the island offers an October experience that invites travelers to explore what may still linger after the sun goes down.

Presented by the Jekyll Island Authority, Gilded Age Ghosts & Ghouls combines walking and trolley transportation through the island’s National Historic Landmark District. Along the way, guests encounter the histories of former residents, accounts of unexplained happenings and costumed interpreters who bring the Jekyll Island Club era to life.

For Pride Journeys readers who enjoy weaving a little mystery into their fall travels, the experience offers an atmospheric way to discover the people behind this coastal destination’s historic facades.

Halloween Among the Elite

The evening begins at Mosaic, Jekyll Island Museum, with an introduction to how the Gilded Age elite celebrated Halloween. It is a fitting starting point for a journey into an era when wealthy families escaped to the island for winters spent in grand cottages beneath sprawling live oaks.

From there, guests venture into the historic district, where the focus shifts from seasonal customs to stories associated with the cottages themselves. Current staff members share spooky experiences they have reported while working inside these buildings, adding a contemporary perspective to the island’s older legends.

The setting provides much of the atmosphere. Exploring historic homes after dark gives visitors a different perspective on spaces once occupied by Club members, their guests and the employees who kept island life running.

A Tragedy at DuBignon Cottage

One of the tour’s most haunting accounts centers on J. William Hart, an assistant superintendent of the Jekyll Island Club.

In 1914, Hart was shot and killed after confronting a Club fisherman who was collecting sea turtle eggs in a prohibited area. His body was held at DuBignon Cottage before being transported to Athens for burial.

Stories associated with the cottage have since included unexplained footsteps, voices and slamming doors. Those reported encounters lend an eerie dimension to a place connected to a documented tragedy, while Hart’s story offers a glimpse into the lives and responsibilities of the people who worked behind the scenes at the Club.

Real Lives Behind the Legends

The evening concludes with costumed interpreters portraying former Jekyll residents and sharing the stories that have followed them for more than a century.

What distinguishes Gilded Age Ghosts & Ghouls is its connection to real people. Every story on the tour traces back to someone associated with the island, from wealthy Club members and railroad executives to household staff.

That breadth gives the experience depth beyond its ghostly atmosphere. Behind each cottage lies a human story, and this after-dark journey invites visitors to consider whose lives—and whose memories—remain part of Jekyll Island.

For travelers drawn to historic places and a touch of Halloween intrigue, it is an opportunity to see the island in a different light. Check the Jekyll Island Authority’s current schedule, ticket availability and visitor information before planning your evening.
