The Mediterranean archipelago of Malta continues to shine as a destination with a longstanding commitment to equality, safety, and representation. This reputation was recognized when Malta received the Award for Leading LGBTQ Destination at the Baxter Travel Media Agent's Choice Awards, presented in Toronto, June 18, 2026.
The Maltese Islands have built a worldwide reputation as a destination where visitors are welcome regardless of background or identity. Together with Malta's ten-year leadership in the ILGA-Europe Rainbow Index and its participation in IGLTA as a Proud Destination, the award reflects the consistency of the islands' approach to inclusion and hospitality.
This prestigious recognition by a major travel industry publication in Canada joins a series of recent distinctions that underscore Malta's longstanding commitment to equality and inclusion. VisitMalta was also presented with an Outstanding Social Responsibility Award at Global Traveler’s 2026 Leisure Lifestyle Awards for its leadership in advancing LGBTQIA+ initiatives and policies.
Reflecting on the recent achievements, Michelle Buttigieg, VisitMalta’s Rep North America, noted “Malta has so much to offer and cultivating a destination where everyone feels welcome and free to be themselves is central to VisitMalta’s mission. We are very proud to see this reflected in Malta’s international reputation.”
Beyond its commitment to inclusion, Malta's appeal lies in its unique blend of Mediterranean history, culture, and natural beauty. Visitors can explore approximately 9,000 years of history, discover UNESCO World Heritage Sites, swim in crystal-clear waters, enjoy a year-round calendar of festivals and events, experience vibrant nightlife, and savor a culinary scene shaped by centuries of cultural influences. Together, these experiences, paired with the warmth and hospitality of the Maltese people, continue to make the islands a memorable destination for all travelers from around the world.
Michelle Buttigieg added “Malta is somewhere that values authenticity; it is a part of our culture and warm hospitality we encourage you to come as you are.”
