Ogunquit Shines as a Beacon for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Tim Harrington, Ogunquit Maine

Nestled along Maine’s southern coast, Ogunquit has long earned its reputation as one of the most beloved LGBTQ+ beach towns in the United States. With its powdery white sand beaches, charming coastal village vibes, and tight-knit community spirit, this small town offers something truly special: a place where everyone is welcome.

“Ogunquit is such a beautiful waterfront town!” says Tim Harrington, a hospitality leader and owner of The Dunes on the Waterfront. “Life slows down there, and you can truly take a breath away from the every day. It’s a special place, full of dreamers, artists, and locally owned businesses that welcome everyone with open arms.”

Indeed, the town’s roots in inclusivity run deep. Ogunquit began as an artist colony in the 19th century, drawing creatives and free-thinkers from all over. This early foundation helped shape the open-minded, diverse community that thrives there today. “The creative, open-minded energy brought people in from all walks of life, creating a culture of acceptance,” Harrington reflects. “I’ve watched leaders in the city solidify it as a welcoming place for the LGBTQ+ community over the years, from establishing Ogunquit Pride to LGBTQ+ owned businesses opening their doors to all.”

This year, Ogunquit Pride will take place June 6–8, transforming the town into a celebration of love, identity, and community. The festivities kick off with a flag raising in Veteran’s Park and continue with live entertainment, outdoor movie nights, music, food, and local LGBTQ+ vendors. It’s a weekend full of joy, visibility, and pride—embodying the welcoming atmosphere that defines Ogunquit.

For those looking to stay in town, The Dunes on the Waterfront offers a serene retreat just across a tidal river from Ogunquit Beach. Set among the coastal dunes, the property features reimagined vintage New England whitewashed cottages, spread across 12 manicured acres. “I’ve always been drawn to Ogunquit and the community,” Harrington says, “and feel so proud to have created an oasis here for travelers.”

Boutique accommodations like The Dunes play a key role in fostering inclusive travel experiences. “Unlike large chains, we have a hand in every decision,” Harrington explains. “We’re able to reflect the values of the communities we serve on a personal level, whether that’s through partnerships—like our sponsorship of Ogunquit Pride—or the little details that let guests know they belong.”

For those who prefer to stay just outside of town, the nearby village of Kennebunk—only 20 minutes away—offers its own LGBTQ+-friendly coastal charm. The Wanderer, a chic cottage retreat, features 17 white clapboard cottages and a two-bedroom house that blends classic New England design with a relaxed surf lodge feel. Guests can unwind by the pool, hop on a beach cruiser to explore, and end their day gathered around the fire pit.

Whether basking in the sunshine at Ogunquit Beach or enjoying the cozy comforts of a cottage in Kennebunk, travelers will find a warm welcome and an inclusive spirit that feels like coming home. In Ogunquit, Pride isn’t just a weekend—it’s a way of life.
