Universal Horror Unleashed Set to Terrify Chicago with New Year-Round Attraction in 2027

Universal Destinations & Experiences

Chicago is about to become a year-round destination for thrill-seekers and horror fans alike. Universal Destinations & Experiences—the themed entertainment division of Comcast NBCUniversal—has officially announced the launch of Universal Horror Unleashed: Chicago, marking the brand’s first permanent entertainment venue in the Midwest and second in the nation following the upcoming Las Vegas location.

Slated to open in 2027, the immersive horror experience will transform a long-vacant 114,000-square-foot commercial space at 700 W. Chicago Avenue—strategically located across from the soon-to-open Bally’s Casino—into a world-class, spine-chilling entertainment destination. The venue promises terrifying mazes, immersive horror-themed bars, themed food and beverage options, exclusive retail offerings, and nonstop scares that horror fans can enjoy all year long.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

According to World Business Chicago, Universal Horror Unleashed is expected to generate over $1 billion in economic impact for the city, breathing new life into a dormant property while stimulating tourism and the local economy. The attraction will create more than 400 permanent jobs, ranging from scareactors and makeup artists to operations managers and retail staff.

“This is exactly the kind of creative, high-impact investment we’re working to attract,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “It creates hundreds of jobs and cements Chicago as a must-visit destination for entertainment tourism.”

The state of Illinois is also backing the project with incentives through the EDGE (Economic Development for a Growing Economy) program, highlighting the state’s commitment to nurturing innovative business ventures. Governor JB Pritzker praised the decision, stating, “Universal choosing Illinois didn’t happen by accident. Our workforce, infrastructure, and business-friendly environment made it possible.”

A Growing Portfolio of Universal Attractions

Universal Horror Unleashed: Chicago is the latest in a growing list of strategic investments by Universal Destinations & Experiences. The company recently opened Universal Epic Universe in Orlando, announced Universal Kids Resort in Frisco, Texas, and will debut its first European theme park and resort in the United Kingdom. The first Universal Horror Unleashed in Las Vegas is set to open in August 2025.

“Universal Horror Unleashed delivers on our promise to create highly immersive and terrifying horror experiences that connect with fans year-round,” said Page Thompson, President of New Ventures at Universal Destinations & Experiences. “We’re excited to bring this bold concept to Chicago, a city known for its vibrant culture.”

Why Chicago?

Chicago’s central location, robust tourism infrastructure, and creative energy made it a natural fit for Universal’s next immersive project. “Universal’s decision to build in Chicago reflects what more and more companies are recognizing: this is the best big city in the U.S. for access to customers, talent, and opportunity,” said Phil Clement, President & CEO of World Business Chicago.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2026, following design finalization and permitting.
