5 Outside the Box Fitness Essentials

When you think of items needed to fulfill your New Year’s resolution of building a healthier and stronger body, you typically think of the standard workout equipment such as resistance bands, ab roller, free weights and even a stationary bike or treadmill. There are other items that you may not typically think of that are closely aligned with your overall goal. I tried out a few of them over the past few weeks and have a few top recommendations to help you fulfill your 2022 fitness goals and achieve the summer body of your dreams.

SAS workout shoes – The SAS Suprhon offers new waterproof and slip-resistant features with the same enhanced comfort of this US-made brand with performance features a waterproof upper, SuperFabric® toe and heel guard, and multiple layers of shock-absorption, from footbed through to the slip-resistant rubber outsole. Inspired by SAS shoes worn by the U.S. military with similar durability for all fitness enthusiasts. Since I received my pair, I have used them every day I’ve worked out and I have to say they are among the most comfortable shoes I’ve owned. They are also quite stylish for those fashion minded gym rats.

Dosha Mat – This item took me a while to get used to, but after using it for a little over a week, I’ve started to notice a difference. The Dosha Mat is an acupressure mat which is a bit uncomfortable at first, but works, and that’s all that matters. Acupressure is an ancient Ayurvedic treatment which is similar to massage, acupuncture, and reflexology. Acupressure works by massaging and stimulating key points on the body to promote deep relaxation and healing. Acupressure mats benefit the body by relieving tension, soreness and pain in the back, head, neck, shoulders, hips and feet. Acupressure mats are also used to help enter a deep state of relaxation, enjoy deeper and more restful sleep, reduce stress, eliminate headaches, increase circulation, positively affect the nervous and immune systems, help muscles recover faster after exercise, and increase energy levels. Dosha Mat acupressure mats are unparalleled in quality and beauty and are 100% eco-friendly. Each mat features more than 4,500 high-quality acupressure points in the beautiful shape of honeycombs.

Matador Meggings - Matador Meggings has re-engineered men’s leggings for the male anatomy by offering a soft molded crotch cup (aka. modesty pad) concealing VPL (visible penis line). All pairs feature an open pocket for phone, a zipper pocket for valuables, a t-shirt/towel loop, and an inner drawstring to meet the modern men’s needs. They offer dozens of unique prints and bold colors including my favorite, the blue camouflage meggings. They are extremely comfortable and stylish and fit my body perfectly.

Bowflex Weights – I know I mentioned in the opening paragraph that I wanted to feature out of the ordinary workout tools, and dumbbells don’t seem to fit the bill at first glance. I decided to bite the bullet and order these during a Black Friday sale, as they are a bit more expensive, but they are well worth the investment. The set of dumbbells is exactly what I needed to encompass a well-rounded workout. The adjustable weights are perfect for any exercise level and all you need for comprehensive full-body strength training. I have used them for almost every exercise in the past week and I already see results in my chest, abs, shoulders, and arms.

Les Mills + - I thought about hiring a personal trainer to push me to achieve my fitness goals, but then stumbled upon a program called Les Mills +. I was familiar with the brand as the local YMCA uses their classes in their group exercises classes. They were offering a free 30-day trial and access to over 1500 online workouts - including yoga, strength, cardio, HIIT, dance and more. They also offer 3 or 12-week workout plans to help you achieve your goals. It is like having a personal trainer in your living room. For those who live in colder climates, this is a great alternative to trekking to the gym during a snowstorm.

Remember, summer bodies are made in the winter!
