When NYC Broadway performers Josh Franklin and John Wolfe rang in 2020 in Brooklyn, they had no idea they’d be relocating to another state before year’s end. But when the pandemic shuttered theaters and paused their careers, the couple made a bold and unexpected move: they returned to Josh’s hometown of Colorado Springs to open a new kind of venue—one that celebrates and serves the LGBTQIA community.
Their venture, ICONS, quickly became a downtown staple. As the city’s only LGBTQIA-focused food and beverage establishment, ICONS is more than a piano bar—it’s a tribute to queer history and artistry. The venue features work by local artists, honors LGBTQ+ activists and allies, and showcases singing bartenders in a nod to the founders’ Broadway roots.
Their story, recently featured in Business Insider, has drawn national attention—not just for its charm, but for its location. “Why Colorado Springs?” many asked. The city has undergone a cultural transformation in recent years, and Josh and John saw an opportunity to be part of that change, helping to shape a more inclusive and vibrant downtown.
But ICONS’ journey hasn’t been without challenges. In December 2023, a fire at a neighboring business forced the bar to close its doors. Nevertheless, ICONS debuted the next November in a new space that has continued the legacy of a safe and celebratory space for the community, all while retaining its velvety vigor.
“Witnessing and being a part of the evolution in Colorado Springs has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” said co-founder Josh Franklin. “Being a native, I never would have imagined owning a queer establishment in Colorado Springs and it being so widely celebrated throughout the city.”
