A Rising Star on Kauaʻi: Hale Hōkūala Brings Island Culture and Coastal Comfort to Hawaiʻi

A private lānai, views of the Pacific and a day with room for both discovery and relaxation: Hale Hōkūala Kauaʻi, Curio Collection by Hilton, introduces a new island escape overlooking Nāwiliwili Bay near Kalapakī Beach.
The newly opened, 210-room lifestyle resort marks Curio Collection by Hilton’s debut in Hawaiʻi. Situated within the Hōkūala Resort community, the property combines contemporary design, locally inspired dining and cultural programming that encourages guests to connect with Kauaʻi beyond its scenery.
Its name, meaning “House of the Rising Star,” sets the tone for a resort rooted in its surroundings. For travelers planning a romantic getaway, a vacation with friends or a restorative solo trip, Hale Hōkūala offers a base for exploring the island while leaving time to enjoy the view.
Island-Inspired Design
Nestled among mature monkeypod and banyan trees, Hale Hōkūala embraces outdoor living through open-air walkways, expansive lānais and gathering spaces. Depending on their accommodations, guests can take in views of the Pacific Ocean, Hāʻupu Mountain or the Ocean Course at Hōkūala.
The resort’s rooms, including 23 suites, feature floor-to-ceiling windows and private lānais. Interiors draw their palette from the island itself: ocean blues, lush valley greens and the earthy shades of the coastline. Artwork throughout the property explores local cultural heritage and the connections among land, ocean and community.
Designed by Hart Howerton and AHL, with interiors by Looney & Associates, the resort gives its natural setting a central role in the guest experience. A morning coffee outside or a quiet moment overlooking the landscape becomes part of the pleasure of staying here.
Portuguese Flavors Meet Hawaiian Ingredients
Dining is one of Hale Hōkūala’s most distinctive offerings. Led by Executive Chef Hans Lentz and Director of Food & Beverage Romina Migliorini, the culinary program draws on the Portuguese, Native Hawaiian, Polynesian and Asian influences that have shaped Hawaiʻi’s food culture.
The signature restaurant, Figueira, overlooks the Ocean Course’s 18th hole and is described by Hilton as Kauaʻi’s only Portuguese-Hawaiian dining concept. Named for the Portuguese word for “fig tree,” it pairs island-grown ingredients with slow-cooking techniques and Portuguese culinary traditions.
Menu highlights range from Pineapple French Toast with Kuleana Rum caramel to Kauaʻi prawns, Portuguese Fisherman’s Stew and bacalhau no forno. Pastel de nata and malasadas provide sweet reasons to linger, while Hawaiian-grown coffee, local craft beer and a wine list featuring Portuguese and international labels round out the offerings.
Portuguese ceramics and Hawaiian quilt motifs carry the cultural conversation into the restaurant’s design, alongside teak, bamboo and terrazzo.
For a more casual meal, The Wiliwili at Hale Hōkūala serves poolside poke bowls, plate lunch specials, shareable pūpū and shave ice. Tropical cocktails, zero-proof drinks, juices and smoothies offer plenty of options for an afternoon by the water.

Connecting With Kauaʻi’s Living Culture
The resort’s signature cultural immersion program, E Ala Ka Pilina, means “The Awakening of Connection.” Developed with local practitioners, educators, historians, artisans, nonprofits and community organizations, it is intended to introduce visitors to the people and traditions that continue to shape Kauaʻi.
The Kauaʻi Museum serves as the inaugural partner for a series exploring the island’s history and creative expression within the broader Hawaiian story. Future programming is planned around agriculture, lei making, traditional aquaculture, land stewardship, hula and Hawaiian storytelling.
For visitors seeking a deeper understanding of their destination, these experiences offer an opportunity to make cultural learning part of the trip.
Make Time to Move—and Unwind
Hale Hōkūala also gives guests plenty of ways to balance activity with downtime. The property has a pool and fitness center, along with access to a full-service spa, wellness programming, tennis and pickleball courts within the wider resort community.
Golfers can take advantage of preferred tee times at the Jack Nicklaus Signature Ocean Course at Hōkūala. More than five miles of scenic trails, complimentary bicycles and beach amenities expand the outdoor options.
Guests can also explore The Farm at Hōkūala, which highlights canoe plants, native crops and agricultural traditions important to the island.
Located near Līhuʻe Airport, the resort provides a starting point for excursions to Hanalei Bay, the North Shore, Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Park. Travelers can build days around exploring Kauaʻi, then return for poolside refreshments or dinner overlooking the fairway.
With its combination of coastal comfort, distinctive dining and community-based cultural programming, Hale Hōkūala adds a fresh option for travelers eager to experience the island at their own pace.
