Southern Delaware Tourism (SDT) is inviting visitors to dive into the rich cultural landscape of Sussex County this fall with two new initiatives: Arts Around Our Towns and Fall for History. These seasonal campaigns will run from September through November, spotlighting the region’s dynamic arts scene and captivating historical attractions.
In collaboration with local arts organizations, historical societies, museums, and cultural venues, SDT’s latest effort is designed to encourage extended fall weekend stays in Southern Delaware. Whether it’s a lively outdoor festival, a gallery opening, or a walking tour through centuries of local lore, there’s something for every curious traveler to discover.
“Our area has long been a hotbed for artists of all kinds and that’s abundantly evident from the quality and quantity of arts and entertainment options available here year-round,” said Scott Thomas, Executive Director of Southern Delaware Tourism. “This promotion gives us the opportunity to highlight our partners’ incredible work and to encourage visitors to include the arts when they’re making their Southern Delaware travel plans.”
From the shores of the Atlantic Ocean to the banks of the Nanticoke River, Sussex County has nurtured a thriving creative community. Painters, sculptors, actors, musicians, and craftspeople have long found inspiration in the region’s scenic beauty and relaxed lifestyle, fueling a vibrant arts culture that permeates its galleries, theaters, studios, and community spaces.
But the area is equally rich in history—something the Fall for History initiative is bringing to the forefront this season. Southern Delaware boasts an extraordinary range of historical narratives, spanning Native American heritage, agricultural innovation, maritime lore, military endeavors, and stories of pirates, shipwrecks, and colonial intrigue.
“Our area has a rich history dating back to well before the colonial period that visitors and even many locals are not aware of,” said Thomas. “Our Fall for History promotion gives us the opportunity to work with our partners to highlight this history and all of the heritage assets that we’re so fortunate to enjoy throughout Sussex County.”
To make it easier for visitors to plan their trips, SDT has curated two new online hubs packed with information on fall events and attractions. The Arts Around Our Towns page and Fall for History page serve as central calendars for concerts, art walks, historical reenactments, festivals, lectures, and guided tours taking place across the county.
“This is a great way to remind our visitors and local residents that fabulous arts and entertainment and fascinating history are always in Reach of our Beach,” Thomas added.
With cooler weather, colorful foliage, and an abundance of cultural programming, fall is an ideal time to experience everything that Southern Delaware has to offer—where the past meets the present and creativity thrives in every corner.
